Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization Announces Key Milestone in Bayfront Revitalization

42-acre, City-owned parcel on Sarasota’s Bayfront will undergo a comprehensive master planning process

SARASOTA, FL (July 18, 2017) – The Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization (SBPO) has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to solicit a design team that will lead the creation of a comprehensive master plan for a 42-acre, City-owned parcel of land at the heart of Sarasota’s Bayfront. The RFQ invites best-in-class design teams to submit their qualifications to lead a comprehensive master planning process for the site.

“The SBPO is pleased to announce this important milestone in the transformation of our Bayfront,” said AG Lafley, Board Chair of Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization. “The selected design team will engage the community in an approximately 9-month planning process to create a visionary, sustainable and implementable Bayfront revitalization strategy.”

Design teams will have eight weeks to prepare their RFQ responses for consideration. A shortlist of finalist teams will be announced by mid-September and shortlisted teams will meet in Sarasota for interviews in October during a set of open work sessions, or charrettes, with the SBPO. During the charrette interviews, each shortlisted team will have the opportunity to discuss its qualifications and master planning approach in an open, charrette-style work session. A finalist team will be announced in November, with the master planning process commencing shortly thereafter.

“We are thrilled with the level of organizational and community interest throughout the forum process during Bayfront 20:20’s stakeholder meetings,” said Michael Klauber, volunteer chair of Sarasota Bayfront 20:20. “The creation of a professional master plan will affect our community’s Bayfront experience and is the catalyst for achieving our shared vision for this significant community asset.”

The SBPO has engaged HR&A Advisors, an industry-leading economic development and public policy consulting firm, to facilitate the design team selection process.

“Revitalizing Sarasota’s Bayfront is one of the most exciting and promising opportunities for urban transformation in the United States,” said Candace Damon, Vice Chairman of HR&A Advisors. “We look forward to recruiting a design team that will help Sarasotans realize their aspirations for the Bayfront.”

The RFQ is available for download at www.sbpo.org. Proposals are due September 1, 2017 at 5:00 PM EDT.
